DPT was well known for it's high end SCSI host adapters. At the end of the 1980s they produce a caching disk controller for the ESDI interface, the PM3011E/75.

The PM3011E is a disk coprocessor board. A Motorola 68000 processor manages the ESDI storage hardware with 512KB RAM standard, upgradeable to 16MB RAM. Setup is done from within DOS with the dptfmt.exe utility. It was considered one of the most fast controller cards of it's time. The retail price for this device was well above 1K USD in 1990.

SmartCache controllers are capable of automatically remapping the drive geometry so that ESDI drives appear to the system as standard 17 sector-per-track drives, the controller automatically increases the apparent number of heads and/or cylinders to yield the full drive capacity.  As long as the operating system supports the increased number of heads and/or cylinders, the entire capacity of the drive can be utilized with the standard disk driver or BIOS. In fact, the SmartCache controller can emulate any drive geometry with up to 2048 cylinders, 64 heads, and 255 sectors per track.

The PM3011/75 will control standard ESDI drives with data rates of up to 20MHz, and with capacities of up to 4GB per drive. Although up to four ESDI drives can be controlled by the PM3011/75 controller, most operating systems will only allow a maximum of two drives to be used without special software drivers.  The BE3011 BIOS Table Expander Chip plugs into the controller and allows certain operating systems to access  disk drives with greater capacity than those in the standard BIOS.

SmartCache controllers come with an integral 0.5 Mbytes of cache RAM. The SmartCache controller can be configured with a maximum of 16 Mbytes of cache by adding one MX3011 Expansion Card and up to three MM3011 memory modules.

The PM3011/E75 is a universal translator, which means it will use any combination of cylinder, head, and sector per track values as long as they do not exceed 1024cyl, 16hd, and 63spt. It's possible to enter these values in the user defined drive type in the system BIOS.

You may enter the usual drive type '1' in the system BIOS too, if the BE3011 BIOS table expander chip should make the geometry translation. The BE3011 (BT-0001-002-H) fortunately supports head mapping for drives with more than 504MB storage space even though the manual says it doesn't. Place a jumper on Y7 to activate the BE3011.

At boot time the BE3011 performs controller diagnostics which may be interrupted by pressing any key.  It takes a while until the boot process continues. Get a coffee. Wait. At the DOS prompt enter dptfmt. This will start the drive preparation utility from DPT. Dptfmt will recognize the ESDI drive automatically and low-level-format the drive.
